Bluffton, Hilton Head, Okatie, these communities sit in one of the most beautiful and naturally humid regions in the country. Average relative humidity regularly climbs above 80% during summer, and even in winter it rarely dips below 50%. For your walls, this is a constant challenge.
What Humidity Does to Drywall
Standard gypsum drywall absorbs water vapor from the air, and over time this causes tape joint failure, sagging panels, mold growth behind wall surfaces, nail and screw pops, and persistent paint adhesion problems. Catching these early is always less expensive than a full remediation.
Choosing the Right Materials
In bathrooms, laundry rooms, and any space near exterior walls, we specify moisture-resistant drywall or fiberglass-mat products. For paint, look for coatings with mildew-resistant additives and a quality vapor-barrier primer in problem areas. We have seen budget paints fail in under a year while premium moisture-resistant coatings last a decade or more.
Ventilation Is Half the Battle
Ensure bathroom fans vent outside, not into the attic, and run them for at least 20 minutes after every shower. In crawlspace homes, confirm your vapor barrier is intact and vents are clear. A properly sized and maintained HVAC system does more to protect your walls than almost any other investment.
